Transport Allowance (TPTA) Rules 2026: Current Rates for Level 1 to 18

Transport Allowance (TPTA) is granted to Central Government employees to compensate for the cost of commuting between the place of residence and the place of duty. Whether you use your own car, bike, or public transport, this allowance is a fixed component of your monthly salary.

With fuel prices rising, employees are expecting a significant hike in TPTA in the 8th Pay Commission. Let’s understand how it is calculated and what to expect in 2026.

How is Transport Allowance Calculated?

Unlike HRA (which is a % of Basic Pay), TPTA is a Fixed Amount based on your Pay Level and the City you are posted in.

Additionally, you get Dearness Allowance (DA) on top of this fixed TPTA amount.

  • Formula: $TPTA = Fixed\_Amount + (Fixed\_Amount \times Current\_DA\%)$

This means whenever DA increases, your Transport Allowance automatically increases. (Check current DA rates in our [DA Calculation Guide].

Current TPTA Rates (7th Pay Commission)

Employees are divided into two categories based on their posting location:

  1. Higher TPTA Cities: (19 Major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, etc.)
  2. Other Places: All other cities and towns.
Pay LevelHigher TPTA Cities (Amount)Other Places (Amount)
Level 9 and above₹7,200 + DA₹3,600 + DA
Level 3 to 8₹3,600 + DA₹1,800 + DA
Level 1 and 2₹1,350 + DA₹900 + DA

Note: Officers drawing pay in Level 14 and above are entitled to use an official car, or they can opt for TPTA of ₹15,750 + DA.

Expected Hike in 8th Pay Commission

In the 8th Pay Commission, the fixed TPTA base is expected to be revised to match the rising cost of petrol and diesel.

  • Projection: The base rates (₹7,200 / ₹3,600) might be multiplied by a factor of 1.5 to 2.0.
  • Impact: For a Level 9 officer in Delhi, the TPTA could jump from ₹7,200 (Base) to approx ₹12,000 (Base) + DA, making car ownership much more affordable.

TPTA and Car Loans

A higher Transport Allowance directly supports your vehicle maintenance.

  • Many banks offer special Car Loan Schemes for government employees where the EMI is calculated based on your Gross Salary (including TPTA).
  • If you are planning to buy a new car after the 8th Pay hike, your increased TPTA can essentially cover your monthly Fuel Costs or a part of your Car Loan EMI.
