Transport Allowance (TA) Rules: Rates After 50% DA Merger Explained

With Dearness Allowance (DA) currently at 58%, the calculation for Transport Allowance (TA) has become a hot topic. Unlike House Rent Allowance (HRA), which simply jumps to a new slab (30%), Transport Allowance follows a different, dynamic formula that many employees overlook.

Does the Base TA Rate increase by 25% automatically now that DA has crossed 50%? Or does it simply carry the DA load?

In this article, we explain the Transport Allowance Rules for 2026, the list of 19 Higher TPTA Cities, and the exact calculation formula for Level 1 to Level 18.

The “50% DA” Rule for TA: A Common Confusion

There is a widespread myth that, like other allowances (CEA, Hostel Subsidy), the Base Rate of Transport Allowance increases by 25% when DA crosses 50%.

The Fact:

According to current 7th CPC instructions, the Base Rate of TA does NOT increase. However, the Total TA increases significantly because TA is the only allowance that earns Dearness Allowance on itself.

The Formula:

$$\text{Total TA} = \text{Base TA Rate} + (\text{Base TA Rate} \times \text{Current DA \%})$$

Since DA is now 58%, your TA is effectively 1.58 times the base rate.
